How can architecture help us know the philosophy of shams-i-Tabrizi?
Shams-i-Tabrizi or Shams al-Din Mohammad (1248-1185) was a Persian Muslim, who is credited as the spiritual instructor of Mewlānā Jalāl ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi, in his philosophy shams finds reality or god in light. One of his facts is a line in Quran where it says «Allah is the light of skies and ground «. He believes everyone who wants to know god should understand the light and the one who gets to know god has unified with light. In one of the most famous speeches of shams he explains the levels of knowing god. He says « The writer wrote three types of lines… someone just calls him and no one else… another one both calls him and others… and the other one neither calls him nor others… The third is me…»
This proposal tries to convey the philosophy of shams about reality to visitors of his tomb. The mentioned speech of shams about reaching to reality Is the base concept for the Tomb. we believe the three lines refer to three types of knowing god, reality or light… every space can introduce light in a different ways.
The site of the project is in khoy (located in east of Iran) where the last tomb of Shams-i-Tabrizi was. The previous tomb was a building with three towers. During time and because of flood and earthquake whole building was ruined except one of towers. The mentioned tower is preserved and placed as an object in museum of shams.
